Moonlight is natural light

I love moonlight photography. Especially in the Fall. With the naked eye, during a full moon, shadows are easily visible. Imagine your camera set at ISO 3200. This photo, for example, looks almost like a daytime exposure except for the light from the windows. It looks familiar, yet something about it is different, unusual.

There is a delicate balance when capturing images after the sun has gone down. Flash pictures rarely look natural outside with the stark contrast of flash lighting against a dark background. The “light painting” technique is interesting, whether using flash or just a flashlight, but “natural looking” it ain’t. Moonlight is a bit on the blue side but somehow, not sure how, it looks good on digital. These shots were taken with auto white balance, with 30 second exposures at 3200 ASA. I haven’t had a chance to look at the images at 100% but they look pretty cool as proofs on my iPad.

Mind you, a full moon helps. I’d like to try, before it gets too chilly, some outdoor portraits under moonlight to see what it does to skin tones though I strongly suspect that i’ll run out of moonlight before I get the chance. Who knows? Maybe there will be warm spell in 28 days….
